Key takeaways

  • By followers: interactions ÷ followers. By reach: interactions ÷ reach.
  • Reach-based is fairer for Reels, which travel beyond followers.
  • Compare yourself with your own past, not with celebrities.

Engagement rate tells you how many people who saw (or follow) you actually did something: liked, commented, shared or saved. Brands use it to judge whether a creator's audience is real and interested.

The two formulas

  • By followers: (likes + comments + shares + saves) ÷ followers × 100.
  • By reach: the same interactions ÷ the post's reach × 100.

The follower formula is what most media kits show. The reach formula is fairer for Reels, because Reels are shown to many people who don't follow you.

What's a good rate?

It depends on size: smaller accounts usually have higher rates than large ones. The most useful comparison is with yourself: is your rate rising or falling over the last few months?
