How to add captions to your Reels that people actually read

Burned-in captions vs Instagram's auto captions, choosing a style, fonts and colours, timing each line, and captions in Hindi or Hinglish.

Key takeaways

  • Burned-in captions show for everyone, in every app, exactly as you styled them.
  • Short lines, big text and a word-by-word highlight are easiest to follow.
  • Always proofread names and numbers before you post.

Captions do two jobs on a Reel: they keep people watching with the sound off, and they make your words easier to follow even with it on. Here's how to add captions that look intentional, not auto-generated.

Burned-in captions or Instagram's own?

Instagram can show automatic captions that viewers switch on themselves, but you don't choose how they look and not everyone sees them. Burned-in (open) captions are part of the video: everyone sees them, on Reels, Shorts or TikTok, styled exactly as you chose. For clips and talking videos, burned-in captions are the safer choice.

Pick a style that fits the content

  • Word by word: each word lights up as it's spoken. Great for fast talkers and podcasts.
  • Bold white or yellow with an outline: readable on any background.
  • Boxed text: a solid box behind the words, best over busy footage.
  • Big and loud: all caps for punchy, high-energy clips.

Then make it yours: a serif or condensed font, your brand colour for the text or for the highlighted word, and ALL CAPS on or off. Keep the same look for a series so people recognise your clips.

Time and place each line

A line should appear as the words are said and stay until the next one starts, so the screen never flickers empty. Keep captions in the middle or the upper part of the frame, clear of the profile name and buttons at the bottom. If a line is too long, split it.

Captions in Hindi and Hinglish

If you speak Hindi or mix Hindi and English, choose how it should be written: Hindi in Devanagari, Hinglish in English letters (“aaj hum baat karenge”), or an English translation for a wider audience. AiHopper's Reel captions support all three, and you can edit every line before it's drawn on the video.

Proofread the three usual mistakes

  1. Names of people, brands and places.
  2. Numbers, prices and dates.
  3. Words that sound alike (their/there, sell/cell).
